Uttarkashi–Harsil road poora din saaf raha, sabhi gaadiyan bina rukawat chal rahi thi.

Harsil mein winter ka peak season ab shuru ho gaya hai. Raatein bahut thandi ho rahi hain aur subah-subah zameen par pala jam raha hai. Subah halki si barfbaari bhi hui.

Din mein mausam saaf aur normal raha, poora din achhi dhoop nikli. Uttarkashi se Harsil tak road bilkul theek tha aur gaadiyan aaram se aa-jaa rahi thi.

Is samay aane wale mehmaan bhaari jacket, thermal, topi aur dastaane saath laayein. Subah jaldi nikalne par sadak par pale ka dhyan rakhein.

Uttarkashi to Harsil road: stretch by stretch

The 75 km drive from Uttarkashi takes 2.5–3.5 hours on the Gangotri highway. These are the places our road status refers to.

  1. 0 kmUttarkashiLast big market. Fill fuel, withdraw cash and buy medicines here.
  2. ≈13 kmManeriDam and small market. Usually a smooth stretch.
  3. ≈32 kmBhatwariKnown landslide zone. In the monsoon this is where the road most often closes.
  4. ≈46 kmGangnaniHot springs and tea stops. A good break before the climb.
  5. ≈65 kmSukhi TopHighest point of the drive. First place to get snow and black ice in winter; drive slowly on shaded turns.
  6. ≈70 kmJhalaApple orchards begin. The valley opens up from here.
  7. ≈75 kmHarsilHarsil bazaar. Bagori is about 1 km further, Dharali about 3 km towards Gangotri.

What our road status means

Open
Normal traffic. Any car or bike can drive it in daylight.
Open with caution
The road is open, but with ice, fresh snow, debris or one-lane stretches. Drive slowly and avoid driving after dark.
Closed
Blocked by snow or a landslide. BRO usually clears it within hours. Wait in Uttarkashi or call us before you set off.

Before you drive to Harsil

  • Leave Uttarkashi by 2 pm so you reach Harsil in daylight. Shaded turns freeze after sunset in winter.
  • Fill fuel and withdraw cash in Uttarkashi. There is no reliable ATM in Harsil.
  • After heavy snow, wait for BRO to clear the road. It usually reopens within hours.
  • In winter, carry snow chains or check that your driver has them, and keep warm clothes in the car, not the boot.

Has it snowed in Harsil?

Each daily update says whether there is no snow, snow on the peaks only, light snow or heavy snow in Harsil. Harsil usually gets snow from mid-December to February, but the timing changes every year.

Is Gangotri temple open now?

Gangotri temple closes for winter the day after Diwali and reopens on Akshaya Tritiya in April or May. In winter, Maa Ganga is worshipped at Mukhba village, about 4 km from Harsil.

Is there mobile network in Harsil?

Jio works best in Harsil, and Airtel works in parts of the village. The network drops on some stretches between Bhatwari and Sukhi Top, so share your plan with family before you leave Uttarkashi.
